CHARMING SUNSETS: PALEONTOLOGICAL VISIT TO THE SIMA DE LAS PALOMAS. Neanderthals, the other humanity (CABEZO GORDO)

3âŽGUIDED VISIT WITH AN ARCHAEOLOGIST WHO EXCAVATES AND STUDIES THE SIMA DE LAS PALOMAS. RESULTS AND FINDINGS OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL INTERVENTION AND CONSERVATION OF THIS SITE.
The objective of the activity is to publicize the latest archaeological actions that are being carried out at the site, discovered in 1991. Nowadays, the Sima de las Palomas is undoubtedly the most important Neanderthal site in the Spanish Mediterranean arc. and the second in importance on Fossil Man in the Iberian Peninsula, after Atapuerca.  The Sima de las Palomas is located on the southern slope of Cabezo Gordo, a Protected Landscape that has great biotic, natural, paleontological and cultural interest. You will go up to a viewpoint where the paleoanthropological site is located.  From this strategic place, you can see the crops of Campo de Cartagena. The entrance is about 80 m away. above sea level and allows a beautiful panoramic view of the Mar Menor, the largest salt lagoon in Europe. In addition, you will visit the Cueva del Agua, an old mine with a natural water lake where 5 different species of bats currently live.

Meeting point:Â Cabezo Gordo Car park. South hillside.
Duration:Â 2 hours approx.
Important:Â It is not possible to do this activity with baby s pushchair, wheelchairs, crutches or reduced mobility. Children up to 3 years old are free (no reservation required) but you must specify that they are coming, in order to be counted, in the comment provided when making the reservation. It is recommended to assess whether this activity is suitable or not depending on each child, since it is a trekking route and you have to walk and depending on the time of year it is very hot. You should wear comfortable shoes, a hat, water and a FLASHLIGHT.
